Meet the Author
Toni Curtis
Helping women understand, nourish, and trust their bodies.
For more than three decades, Toni has walked alongside women and families through pregnancy, birth, and the uncharted wilderness of postpartum. She is a doula, childbirth educator, lactation counselor, and certified nutritional therapist — and the founder of BirthWise Doula Services.
She has trained doulas across six nations, pioneered insurance-partnered doula care, and served on the DONA International DEI Subcommittee. Of all the titles she holds, the work that commands her soul is a single one: helping people reclaim their health, their power, and their stories.

Why this book exists
I wrote this book because surviving isn’t the same as healing.
Toni lived in a body that felt more like a battlefield than a home — and was told it was normal. This book is the map she built when the answers she needed didn’t exist.
This book is my rebellion against that neglect — a bridge between ancient ancestral wisdom and cutting-edge modern science.
- 01
Dismissed
Years of irregular cycles, chronic fatigue, inflammation, and infertility — met with clipboards and “just relax.”
- 02
The search
She crossed oceans of thought — endocrinology, Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine, and her grandmother’s Caribbean remedies.
- 03
The truth
Epigenetics revealed it: her body was not broken. It was depleted — and depletion can be reversed.
- 04
The return
Beginning with a terrified nervous system, then nourishment. Cycles regulated. Pain dissolved. Life returned.
A framework built over decades
The Physiological Birth Model
A holistic, lifespan approach to embodied care that Toni developed over decades of walking alongside birthing people — honoring birth as a physiological process orchestrated by the genius of the body, and care that sees each person’s full history and story.
- Birth as a physiological process, not an emergency
- Early-life development & lifelong body wisdom
- The social determinants of health
- Trauma-informed, culturally responsive care

A personal message
For thirty years, I have walked alongside families through pregnancy, birth, and the long, often uncharted wilderness that follows. I have been in the room when life arrived. I have held the shoulders of weeping mothers.
I have also watched too many women dismissed — told their exhaustion was normal, their pain imagined, their ancestral wisdom mere folklore. This book is my answer to that neglect.
Your body created life. It traveled through a profound, tectonic transformation. It deserves to be nourished. It deserves to be honored. It deserves to be fully restored.
You are not alone. Your body is wise. And your healing is not only possible — it is your birthright.
Toni Curtis
With deep respect and care
